What is Health Data Australia?
Developed by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) in partnership with the health research community through the Health Studies Australian National Data Asset (HeSANDA) program, Health Data Australia is a searchable catalogue of Australian clinical trials data that researchers have submitted for potential access and reuse.
Its goal is to make health research data more discoverable, accessible, and reusable without compromising data ownership or governance.
How it works
Rather than storing data directly, Health Data Australia enables the data owners (or custodians) to provide and share descriptions of the data (‘metadata’) to improve discoverability. In addition to metadata, data owners provide other documentation describing the dataset, such as study protocols and data dictionaries.
Importantly, the organisations responsible for the original clinical trials retain full control over their data. Health Data Australia supports a standardised workflow for managing data requests, while allowing each data owner to apply their own governance requirements for reviewing and approving access to data.
A visual overview of the HeSANDA Data Request Workflow illustrates how the different components of the system – Federation Service, Nodes, and ANZCTR – work together to support this infrastructure.
More information about discovering and requesting access to clinical trial data using Health Data Australia is available here, or you can watch the video.
Opportunities to contribute
Sydney Health Partners encourages Principal Investigators to contribute to Health Data Australia by registering metadata for their clinical trials. Doing so increases visibility, supports collaboration, and enhances the impact of their research.
