About the group

The Geriatric Medicine Clinical Academic Group (CAG) brings together multidisciplinary clinical and research expertise in complex care of older people. The CAG aims to build capacity to provide research informed care for older people in hospital, at transitions of care and in the community (including residential aged care).

In 2022, the CAG collaborated with colleagues nationally to obtain funding from the MRFF Dementia, Ageing and Aged Care Mission for a national network of ageing researchers (Australian Frailty Network), and a NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in frailty. Our current focus areas are implementation of frailty screening in hospital and building capacity in clinicians and consumer involvement in research on the healthcare of older people.

Objectives

Support multidisciplinary research and capacity building in areas relevant to geriatric medicine across the partners
Provide a focus and framework to build research expertise in management of complex older patients in all local health district partners and across the wider health system
Combine skills of the partners to create a strong, new network that can facilitate multi-site clinical research to build capacity across SHP
Support early career researchers’ applications for scholarships, fellowships and translational research grants

Measurement of frailty among older people in hospital

A new clinical implementation study which will automatically screen older patients for frailty in real time funded by the Medical Research Future Fund (2024-2029).
