Federal Budget 2026-27: SHP and AHRA welcomes investment in research translation and the MRFF
Published date:
SHP joins Australian Health Research Alliance (AHRA) in welcoming the Australian Government’s continued investment in health and medical research through the 2026–27 Federal Budget, including an additional $508.5 million over four years to increase disbursements from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).
AHRA Chair, Professor Carol Hodgson, said the Budget recognises the importance of sustained investment across the full research continuum – from discovery and clinical trials through to implementation in healthcare settings and improved outcomes for patients and communities.
“The increased investment in the Medical Research Future Fund is an important and welcome commitment to Australia’s health and medical research future,” Professor Hodgson said.
“The planned increase in MRFF disbursements to $1 billion annually from 2030-31 provides much-needed confidence for the sector and reinforces the importance of health and medical research as a national priority.”
AHRA welcomed the Government’s commitment of an additional $508.5 million over four years to increase MRFF disbursements, noting the importance of finalising the National Health and Medical Research Strategy to unlock this investment.
SHP is one of 12 NHMRC-accredited centres within the Australian Health Research Alliance (AHRA), working in collaboration to respond to Australian Government priorities, and the needs of our health services and researcher communities.
