A collaborative group of clinical trial operational staff from across Sydney Health Partners has developed a new template for surveying clinical trial participants about their experiences.

The PREMS Survey Template for Clinical Trials has been published in response to Australia’s National Clinical Trial Governance Framework which requires health organisations to seek regular feedback from clinical trial participants about their experiences.

The survey template can be downloaded from the Sydney Health Partners website and tailored to suit the needs of individual departments or organisations.

SHP Clinical Trials Project Manager, Alison Rego, says the survey template is specifically designed to gather feedback from people participating in clinical trials about their experiences.

“The focus of the questions is on the services provided by hospital staff as part of delivering the trial, rather than the nature of the trial and the intervention that is being tested,” she said.

It includes a set of core questions, across key stages of a participant’s journey, which organisations can tailor to their needs.

The survey template was developed by a working group formed as a result of the 2024 Trials Without Tribulations workshop hosted by Sydney Health Partners. It builds on earlier work led by Sydney Local Health District to develop a local PREMs survey for clinical trials.

SHP Research Director, Associate Professor Angela Todd thanked the working group members for volunteering their time to develop the PREMs template and accompanying guidance document.

“This was a big collaborative effort by representatives of Sydney, Northern Sydney, Western Sydney and Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health Districts; the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network at Westmead, Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and the Cancer Institute NSW,” she said.

The survey questions were reviewed by health consumers from Consumer Voices in Clinical Trials in NSW to ensure they were clear and easy to complete.

The PREMs Survey Template has been added to the expanding Knowledge Hub, containing a series of resources for anyone who wants to learn more about running clinical trials.
