Intro to HREC Fundamentals

Published on: August 31 2022

Learn about research ethics and governance review processes, and some of the important features of clinical trials.

It has been developed for people who are new members of a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) or research support office. It is designed to assist HREC members to understand and fulfil the very important role they play in ensuring that research is well designed and conducted ethically, with due regard to the rights and safety of research participants.

Module 1: An Introduction to Human Research Ethics and Human Research Ethics Committees
Introducing the impetus for, and role of, human research ethics review.

Module 2: The Values and Principles of Ethical Conduct
Explaining the four values and principles of ethical conduct that guide ethical review under the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (link opens in a new window) (2007, updated 2018).

Module 3: An Introduction to Clinical Trials
Introducing issues that commonly arise in the ethical review of Clinical Trials, including the assessment of risks and benefits, seeking consent, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Each module takes approximately 60-90 minutes to complete and includes a quiz component to help reinforce the lessons.
