A sell-out crowd of around 170 clinical trials professionals packed the Sibyl Centre at the University of Sydney on August 1 to hear presentations about the growing number of new gene therapy trials, important considerations for medical device trials being conducted across Sydney Health Partners, and explanations of innovative new approaches to trial design.

Some insights shared on the day included:

· A strong, agile central team is key to the success of adaptive trials — and these are only gaining momentum.
· AI is reshaping clinical research, from smarter patient matching to enhancing data management.
· Real diversity in trials hinges on meaningful community engagement and empowered and supported local champions.
· Continued professional development for trial staff isn’t optional — it’s essential.

Now in its third year, Trials Without Tribulations has established itself as a distinctive and valued event. SHP’s Research Director, Associate Professor Angela Todd said there was nothing else quite like it on the health and medical research calendar.

“Trials Without Tribulations has fulfilled a previously unmet need for clinical trials professionals in our Partnership to get together, compare their experiences and share learnings,” she said.

“In addition to the networking opportunity, working groups formed following the Workshops are producing practical new resources for use by clinical trialists across the Partnership.”

The event featured the launch of Facility and Unit Profile (Site CV) templates (see story here) – the result of the collaborative efforts by one of these working groups, with significant support provided by SHP’s Clinical Trial Project Manager, Alison Rego.

Expert-led breakout sessions also offered information on writing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures and the practical implementation of Good Clinical Practice.
