Applications open next March, with separate application streams for projects in urban and rural areas across Australia. Individual grants will be a minimum of $250,000 up to $10 million, for projects which must be completed within five years.

The grant opportunity forms part of the Medical Research Future Fund and builds on the RART Initiative which began in 2018. The Australian Government has committed $216 million for the Initiative between 2019-20 and 2027-28.

To date Sydney Health Partners has disbursed three rounds of RART grants totaling $5.3 million for 36 research projects across the Partnership region. Fourteen projects have been completed and the rest are scheduled to report their results between June 2021 and mid ’22.

The next RART grant round requires researchers to apply directly to the MRFF rather than SHP.

“We welcome the move to open up the expanded RART initiative to a wider competitive process,” said Sydney Health Partners Executive Director, Professor Don Nutbeam.

“Over the past three years Sydney Health Partners has been able to fund some extremely promising translational research projects through the previous RART funding scheme, albeit at a relatively modest level of funding.  We are confident that several of these will be good prospects for scaling up through the new grant call.”

“Sydney Health Partners stands ready to advise researchers within our Partnership about projects and their suitability for the RART grant opportunity’s criteria.”

The Initiative is investing in research projects that encourage academic researchers and health service providers to collaborate to improve health care delivery, services and system sustainability.
